Aiguebelle a été fondée en 1137 par les moines de Morimond, quatrième fille de Cîteaux fondée en 1115 en Champagne. Le monastère est bâti dans un vallon isolé, comme le voulait la tradition cistercienne, au confluent de trois ruisseaux, d'où le nom de "belles eaux", Aiguebelle. Au XIIème siècle, le monastère bénéficie des donations des seigneurs voisins et accroît considérablement son domaine
