Le fondateur de l'ordre des bénédictins, St Benoît décédé un siècle plus tôt en Italie est enterré dans le monastère du mont Cassin. Vers 672, l'abbé de Fleury décide de rapatrier le corps de St Benoît, le cadavre est exhumé et ramené en France. C'est à cette époque, que Fleury change de nom pour s'appeler l'abbaye de St Benoît.
