Ancienne église abbatiale et collégiale, sur un plan octogonal reprenant celui de la chapelle impériale d'Aix-la-Chapelle, ce qui lui vaut d'être l'une des églises romanes les plus célèbres du Rhin supérieur. L'abbaye a été fondée par Rodolphe d'Altenbourg de la famille de Habsbourg vers 1030. L'église a été consacrée par le pape Léon IX en 1049.
